Ex-Olympians thrown to the curb

Canada Olympic House closes doors to former athletes now working for media organizations


BEIJING–A banner celebrating Mark Tewksbury's gold-medal performance hangs in Canada Olympic House, but the swimmer found himself sitting on the curb outside when he tried to gain entrance to the hospitality haven.

It turns out Canada's former Olympians are not welcome at what's known as "Canada House" if they are working at the Games in a media capacity.

Canada House is an Olympic tradition, a place where athletes and their families and Canadian Olympic Committee officials can chill out, have a beer and a bite and watch the Games on TV. Until recently, the media were also welcome, but not any longer.
